say-hello-to-joomla-3

The last Joomla 2.5 update has been already released and with the new year, there will be no support, updates and fix anymore for Joomla 2.5 versions. This was announced couple of months ago by the Joomla developers and on 10th of December they have released the last Joomla 2.5 update to 2.5.28.

This is a major milestone for all Joomla 2.5 owners and the right time to make a plan on upgrading your Joomla 2.5 website to the latest stable Joomla 3 version.

Joomla 2.5 was the most successful Joomla release up to this moment which brought many new powerful features and improvements after Joomla 1.0 and Joomla 1.5 generations.

Updating a Joomla 2.5 site to Joomla 3.x is actually a very easy task. Previously such upgrade between major Joomla releases was painful and experience full of errors.

In case you are not sure what are the benefits of such upgrade or you are not sure that you want to upgrade your Joomla version from 2.5 to 3 here are some things that you should consider:

1. Lots of new features
Usually every Joomla major upgrade brings a lot of new features that eliminate the need of some third party extensions and this is always good. You can find more information about the new Joomla 3 features at the following article.

2. Security
As with every script when it changes its structure, a migration is required. The main drawback of using an old Joomla version is that it is no longer supported by it’s developers. This creates potential problems with security as there will be no more security patches for such older Joomla versions.

3. Future Support
The main and most important reason why you should upgrade is that from December 31th Joomla 3 becomes the Joomla flagship version and the whole community will continue to support it.

It would be hard to find support for older Joomla versions in the Joomla. All new modules, themes and plugins will be exclusively released for Joomla 3 and it would be hard to find nice new modules or themes for Joomla 2.5 or god forbid Joomla 1.5.

To sum it up I would like to assure all of the users using Joomla 2.5 that there is nothing to worry about. If your website is being built on Joomla 2.5 and it is not constantly maintained you can keep it this way.

However if your website is constantly being used and updated with new features you should consider upgrading it to Joomla 3.
With our next blog posts we will cover all the steps that have to be taken in order to upgrade your Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3.

Of course in case you are unable to upgrade your Joomla 2.5 website or need assistance with this our Genius Support Team will be more than glad to do that for you.
